Man goes shopping

I received this interesting email from a male friend over the weekend, describing his shopping strategy:

If I want to buy a £75 external hard drive for my computer for example, I will go and look at them in at least four shops, asking each sales assistant for an opinion. Then I will read up on the model I finally decide upon in Which or other reports. If I could find someone who uses one of these I would ask them if they made the right decision and where they bought theirs. As a final act to convince myself I will go online to see if I can buy the model cheaper and if this doesn't bring a result, after about two weeks have gone by, I will go back to the shop and make my purchase. I think the word people use to describe this method of purchasing is called 'agonising.' On the other hand, I have been with [my wife] who has seen completely by chance an item of clothing on the rack for £150 and 90 seconds later the credit card is being swiped. But I really do have a lot of fun using my method and am reminded of that fun every time I use the item
.

The funny thing is that I shop both ways, it just depends on what the item is; I spent months searching for the perfect black spike heel knee boots at just the price, but last week I bought a dress on a whim that looked great on me and took home even though it had a makeup stain on the neckline. They gave me an extra 10% off and a little Shout took care of the makeup stain. So it really depends on what I’m looking for; if it’s fashion commodity like black spike heel knee boots I’ll shop around, but when something special comes up I’ll jump on it too.

Must say I've always thought "shopping" is simply a synonym for "buying" whereas my husband thinks shopping and looking mean the same thing.

This sounds just like my husband - weeks of research before buying anything, and he really enjoys it. He applies this to buying household goods and, as I find shopping for those really boring (as oppsoed to the pleasures of clothes shopping), I'm pleased for him to do this and it means we usually make good buys. He shops for clothes differently from me as well. He would never consider trying anything on that he wasn't seriously considering buying, whereas for me it's part of the pleasure as well as being the only way to really try out new styles, colours etc. Whenever he goes clothes shopping, he knows exactly what he wants and that's what he comes back with. He also would get as much pleasure from buying a hard disk as he would from buying a new shirt, whereas for me shopping for clothes or make up is the only kind of shopping I really enjoy. Vive la difference!

He sounds like my hub, who won't buy anything without researching online and in Consumer Reports. Bless 'em.

Like Phyllis, I do both and find pleasure in both.

My problem is that I shop for clothes this way, which I why I never get a bargain. I do love the 'research' part, though.

Anonymous said...

Hah. I do both of these.

One of my friends does the research method mainly. We tease him that he suffers from "premorse". we have spent so much time looking that things he can well afford but just can't make a decision on. this premorse though has cost him some interesting pieces of art. they were unique items and were gone by the time he returned.

My husbands take on manshopping is to simply go to the nearest place and buy something when he decides he needs it. No comparison shopping , no impulse buying either but an attempt to spend as little time as possible in a store.

My husband is easily distracted, ignores lists/maps/instructions of any sort--he is the one in charge, after all--but feels compelled to buy. Very like his mother. He once returned wild-eyed from a mission to acquire a garden rake with several hundred dollars worth of flower bulbs and a ceiling lamp. No rake.

I don't think it gender linked. I do both types of shopping too.
I learned the considered approach from my grandmother. I fondly remember her carpet saga. It went on for months before she finally bought and I'm sure she got as much pleasure from the process as from the carpet itself.
I will also research, compare, deliberate on items, be they clothing, furniture, whatever and have walked away from things I need because they are a "leettle too expensive."
On the other hand I have paid an outrageous amount for impulse items.

It just looks like she doesn't do months of agonising research. She just doesn't talk about it. Why do women read fashion magazines, look at fashion, look at stores, go browsing ? To do research naturaly. I started to vocalize this to my boyfriend. Now he gets it. I told him that I look at the runway stuff, not because I want these exact clothes, but to know what I can expect in high street. I look at glossy magazines to get ideas how to translate this into a affordable and wearable fashion. I look at shop windows to get an overview how much stuff costs and where they have what. And after all that I need 5 minutes to buy a dress or a shoe. This research in my case goes on since I am around 4 years old and am concious of clothes. And since I use my clothes for a long time (we talk about 20 years here), longer than my harddisk is used and longer than my boyfriend can wear his stuff, I sometimes pay more money for it. In the end I pay less per wear and enjoyment than he does.

I'm most definitely a woman, and this is exactly how I shop for clothes and shoes. Well, except if they're vintage and unique, but in that case they're usually not that expensive anyway... because if they are I wait to decide till they're gone, and then regret it :( :)

Greetings,
poet

This is so my husband! I think most guys do that method coz they're less careful with the money than women -- at least, for me. It takes three to four weeks before my husband decides to buy stuff. He would ask a few people in malls then goes home and look for info/reviews online. But I think it still depends on what item you have to buy. As for me, I do both of these when I go shopping for clothes around here in Florida. Haha!

What surprised both my parents was how shy she seemed, and yet she also seemed quite bright, intellectual. And, sadly, Dad always thought she and Joe D. seemed very much in love.

One of the perks of being a freelance writer is that twice a week I work out of Central Park (who needs a corner office when you have Sheep Meadow?). But while I certainly don't miss the unflattering flourescent lighting of my cubicle, the sun can be equally harsh in Manhattan--even for those of us with naturally tan/dark skin. Lately, I've been toting around Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 85. It's the only heavy-duty, broad-spectrum sunscreen that I'd willingly and frequently use on both my face and my body. I can even wear it underneath makeup (including my favorite Clé de Peau Beaute Foundation--see below) without having to stress about mid-day shine. The formula absorbs quickly and greaselessly, and has a subtle aroma (not overly beachy), so I can still spritz on perfume afterward. Most importantly, it makes protecting my skin from sun damage (Skin cancer! Wrinkles! Age spots!) a complete no-brainer. And, oh yeah, it only costs $10.

In 1941, the Viet Minh – a communist and nationalist liberation movement – emerged under Ho Chi Minh to seek independence for Vietnam from France as well as to oppose the Japanese occupation. Japanese occupation during World War II caused the Vietnamese Famine of 1945, which caused 2 million deaths, or 10% of the population then.[30] Following the military defeat of Japan and the fall of its Empire of Vietnam in August 1945, Viet Minh occupied Hanoi and proclaimed a provisional government, which asserted independence on 2 September.[31]

France-marked USAF C-119 flown by CIA pilots over Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
In the same year the Provisional French Republic sent the French Far East Expeditionary Corps, which was originally created to fight the Japanese occupation forces, in order to pacify the liberation movement and to restore French rule. On November 20, 1946, triggered by the Haiphong Incident, the First Indochina War between Viet Minh and the French forces ensued, lasting until July 20, 1954.

Because many of Vietnam's major universities are located in Hanoi, students from other provinces (especially in the northern part of the country) wishing to enter university often travel to Hanoi for the annual entrance examination. Such events often take place in June and July, during which a large number of students and their families converge on the city for several weeks around this intense examination period. In recent years, these entrance exams have been centrally coordinated by the Ministry of Education, but passing marks are decided independently by each university.

The word Peru is derived from Birú, the name of a local ruler who lived near the Bay of San Miguel, Panama, in the early 16th century.[5] When his possessions were visited by Spanish explorers in 1522, they were the southernmost part of the New World yet known to Europeans.[6] Thus, when Francisco Pizarro explored the regions farther south, they came to be designated Birú or Peru.[7] The Spanish Crown gave the name legal status with the 1529 Capitulación de Toledo, which designated the newly encountered Inca Empire as the province of Peru.[8] Under Spanish rule, the country adopted the denomination Viceroyalty of Peru, which became Republic of Peru after the Peruvian War of Independence.

Most civil disputes appear before a State Court (Pengadilan Negeri); appeals are heard before the High Court (Pengadilan Tinggi). The Supreme Court (Mahkamah Agung) is the country's highest court, and hears final cessation appeals and conducts case reviews. Other courts include the Commercial Court, which handles bankruptcy and insolvency; a State Administrative Court (Pengadilan Tata Negara) to hear administrative law cases against the government; a Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi) to hear disputes concerning legality of law, general elections, dissolution of political parties, and the scope of authority of state institutions; and a Religious Court (Pengadilan Agama) to deal with codified Sharia Law cases.

During the 14th century, the Plantagenets and House of Valois both claimed to be legitimate claimants to House of Capet and with it France—the two powers clashed in the Hundred Years' War.[51] The Black Death epidemic hit England, starting in 1348, it eventually killed up to half of England's inhabitants.[52][53] From 1453 to 1487 civil war between two branches of the royal family occurred—the Yorkists and Lancastrians—known as the Wars of the Roses.[54] Eventually it led to the Yorkists losing the throne entirely to a Welsh noble family the Tudors, a branch of the Lancastrians headed by Henry Tudor who invaded with Welsh and Breton mercenaries, gaining victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field where the Yorkist king Richard III was killed.
