Joy to an old man's heart

Lilibet, is that you?

Matchy matchy bags

According to Sky News, while Gordon and Nicolas are visiting the Emirates Stadium (with Arsene Wenger translating between the two of them) Sarah and Carla are having lunch at Lancaster House to discuss world poverty. It says.

Better suited, height-wise (and Nicolas explains his other advantages)

I enjoyed the article in the Guardian by Imogen Fox about the sartorial contrast between Carla and the Queen, especially the comment about how they both had a black framed handbag but "The Queen's was way more stylish"

Hard to beleive that Carla actually looks matronly than the Queen, who at least has an excuse by being 41 years older.

Did I detect M Sarkozy trying not to reveal the lump in his throat? (Well, the bit of me that's French still reckons that we, ie we French, have the best national anthem - words and music - by far. And very stylish as national anthems go. A whole lot more stirring than that of les rosbifs. Even the other bit of me, ie the English bit, acknowledges that.)

I'm sure Carla's intention was to dress "appropriately", but in all honesty she looks like she's in costume.

Deja - you think that also? HRH has, to my mind, this sort of limited stylistic pallet -- but whoever designs/makes it up obviously tries to give it whatever flash they can..within those limitations, accompanied by the amazing hats. M. Sarkosy, on the other hand, looks to me to be wearing the "I'm only putting this on because it's a state occasion and I don't have to like it" outfit. The hat, to my mind, is an afterthought -- too small to make an impression, but looking like someone told her, "Madame, you must wear a hat - HRH will be wearing one." So, she got one, pinned it on the back of her head and let it sit there. For a Frenchwoman to do that? Scandalous! But again, if she is not accustomed to wearing hats, she has no feel for a) what looks good on her and b) how to wear a hat to best advantage. Too bad - she allowed a short woman in her 80s to upstage her stylistically. For someone to do that who has youth, a lot of attractiveness, and French style as her advantages?

Carla looks tremendously uncomfortable in her clothes--and perhaps in her role as well. Somehow I can't see her putting up with "first lady" duties for long.

How come Phillip doesn't look as dotty as Sarko when he gazes at Miss Carla?

Why do you spell Mr Sarkozy's firstname as Nicholas? It's spelled Nicolas, surely you must know that!

Gosh, our Lizzie's looking rather snazzy there.

To compare Carla to Jackie is so...lazy. Ok, both wore a pillbox hat? C'mon. I felt her outfit was not right either. She could have been appropriate to the occasion in so many other ways. "The Gaze" was very well done. Tip of my hat to you Linda. And 60 going on 16? I love the French national anthem. I don't know if it's my ancestors blood but it gives me a lump in my throat too!

But, Carla's actually Italian, right? Doubt her style ever was French. But, yes, she isn't at her best here. sigh Seems she was at her best in the 90s during her modeling days. She was my favorite. Funny, she wasn't nearly as covered up then! Connection?
