That thing that's happening in America.

Yesterday I was asked at very short notice to fill in for another columnist at the Guardian and turn round a piece in an hour. I wrote about Sarah Palin and small town American values. If you'd like to read the piece it's here. If you'd like to comment I request you do it on the Guardian's site, not this one. I can't turn off comments for one post only, and I don't want to pre-screen comments unless it's really necessary. So head off there and join the fire storm.

One of the comments on the Guardian site, subsequently deleted, was:

FUCKING JEW BITCH FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK YOUR ASS BRIT WHORE

I think the author might have shot himself in the head by now.

Linda, just in case my comment on CiF gets lost in the maelstrom - I liked the piece, I've commented and I've linked it...

Oh Linda, it is always a little scary to get such a comment from a violent misogynist antisemite. Evil. I had already read the piece; I always read the Guardian on-line.

Linda - your headline said it all...and it is very true.

Interesting piece. I was just visiting relatives last week in a small, rust belt Midwest town. Some of them are conservatives, yes, but many are old school Union Democrats. I was surprised at how many of them are enthusiastic about their Democratic candidate.

One thing that's really chapped my hide (to borrow some iconic parlance) is having been told for the last couple of decades that ONLY those small town values are "real" American values, and that the rest of us might as well be from Moscow. It's sad that the one thing that helps people pull themselves and their families out of poverty--education--has gotten such a bad name with many of those people; you'd almost think that some wanted it that way. :-/

I have no doubt that loser was one of my American countrymen.

I'm still thinking about what I might post as a comment.

One much lighter note - I like your short haircut!

Great piece. I won't write a long comment here or there because of technical difficulties, but will simply send my compliments on a fine column.

Really great piece Linda. I agree with you completely.

Wonderful piece, Linda. I have no doubt that the moronic antisemite whose comments were deleted, didn't have the guts to put his name to them. Coward.
