Thought for the day

(Yoko Ono being presented to the Queen - there is only a seven year age gap between them)

A man must be a profound calculator to be a consummate dresser. One must not dress the same, whether one goes to a minister or a mistress; an avaricious uncle, or an ostentatious cousin; there is no diplomacy more subtle than that of dress. Edward Bulwer-Lytton

Very interesting; this photo sent me straight to Wikipedia. Sure enough, there is only a 7 year age difference between them.

Yoko is 74 (b.1933)and the Queen is 81 (b.1926).

And, though Yoko Ono is not "royalty" per se, she comes from a very well educated, highly placed family in Japan, with money on both sides. They suffered during the war but ended up in the US and Yoko Ono went to Sarah Lawrence College, which is where she got into the whole "artist/bohemian" lifestyle. You can't imagine her going to see the queen in anything else - actually, a white pantsuit is probably as elegant as she would get, given her self-image as a rebel. On the other hand, Elizabeth II is a totally different breed of cat - she always saw herself as a standard for her society - so, in a sense, both of them are wearing their appropriate uniforms.
