toby, in fact I think his performances got better and more interesting as he aged. One of my favorite films he did in recent years was "Nobody's Fool" (which was also Jessica Tandy's last film). Great, quiet work.
Yes, it really is sad. A great actor, personality (as opposed to celebrity) and stunningly (to my mind achingly) gorgeous. And, it seems, a thoroughly nice man. Check out the NY Times coverage, especially that by Manohla Dargis (great name, don't you think?). He really will be missed.
and unlike some...he remained a great actor to the end. Never did a crappy job in anything he ever did.

ReplyDeleteAw, Christ. That's sad news.
ReplyDeleteVanity Fair has a nice little slideshow of Newman and Joanne Woodward through the years. So cool.

Hadn't heard. Heart-broken. He was a rare one. Had integrity.
ReplyDeleteIf you say, for example, that you're modelling yourself after George Clooney, you sound like an idiot (no offense to Clooney.)
ReplyDeleteBut if you replace Clooney with Paul Newman...and it makes sense.
