From early Monday I am on a three-week book tour of Singapore, Adelaide, Melbourne, various places in New Zealand, culminating in a one-day shopping trip in Hong Kong. (Thank you, Sarah.) Details of the events will be going up on my main website in the next day or two.
I will be maintaining this site, but it will be more of a travel diary. No thought for the day, I'm afraid, or polls.
In the meantime, I'm pleased to say that I have just signed a contract with my publisher to write a non-fiction book about our relationship with clothes. The provisional title was Why Clothes Matter, but my editor has come up with a better name: The Thoughtful Dresser. Now why didn't I think of that? Publication is scheduled for this time next year.
I hope to meet some of you in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. In the meantime, keep checking in.
Take a hat and some sunscreen, Linda.
ReplyDeleteWonderful news -- another book to look forward to. By the way, the listserv I subscribe to here for Vancouver-ites interested in all things bookish (sent out by the Vanc'r International Writers Festival) mentioned, in the latest newsletter, your book and listed several links to reviews. Of course, as a loyal reader here, I was one step ahead with my copy already ordered. Have a good trip!
ReplyDeleteVancouver, BC, Canada, I should have said

You only have one day to shop in Hong Kong? That's a shame. I recommend another day to go off the beaten track to the warehouses - Joyce, Lane Crawford, Space (Prada, Miu Miu). I also live in Hong Kong and am happy to take you to these places if you have the time. If I don't end up meeting you I highly recommend you check out Vivienne Tam - you may find the perfect dress there. Also, as a New Zealander I agree with Toby - take a hat and sunscreen! Have a great trip!
ReplyDeleteI've just read your Guardian article on Mutton dressers reprinted in Melbourne's Age newspaper. I'm finding mid-40s a terrible age to dress - I am conscious of not wanting to dress too young, but I don't want to dress too old either. Most shops seem to cater for young women or my mother! For work I've always liked wearing a fairly classic look, but now I fear that it might age me. I could try to develop my individual style, but between work, 3 teenagers and postgrad study, I don't have much time to give this due attention. I wish someone would just open a shop catering to my age group, so I could go in there knowing that I wouldn't end up looking like mutton dressed as lamb, or just mutton....
