What size was Marilyn Monroe? A Times journalist tries on her clothes.
As I tentatively tried to coerce my way into the Some Like It Hot dress, Valerie Nelson, the woman charged with caring for the pieces in the Jersey exhibition, talked me through Monroe’s body shape. Monroe was 5ft 5in (I’m an inch shorter); just over eight stone (I’m ¾ of a stone heavier); she had a respectable BMI of 21 (don’t ask). She had an incredibly narrow back and rib cage but big boobs, so if she were to pop into Rigby & Peller for a bra fitting today she would probably be a 30E.
She didn’t have a long body, and although her legs were a lovely shape (beautiful bony ankles and knees) they weren’t particularly long. She had a very short rise (the distance from waist to crotch), but what made her body so extraordinary was the 13-inch difference between her breast and hip measurements and her waist. In her younger years her vital statistics would have come in at 36 23 35, and although her weight fluctuated throughout her career, she always maintained that out-of-this-world body ratio. A real life Jessica Rabbit.
Nelson tells me that they had to get a special mould made for the corset and swimwear dummies in the exhibition because Monroe was such an extreme hourglass shape that no off-the-peg dummies existed in those measurements. The Some Like It Hot dress just about zips up on me – which is pretty mortifying, considering I had always thought of her Sugar phase as a gloriously plump one.

The potential for permanent damage (strained seams, rips, sweat/fatty acids from the skin) is too great - in fact they should be handled carefully with gloves and not touched directly at all!
ReplyDeleteTaking off my aspiring curator hat, I can't blame this journalist for taking the opportunity, and since the costume is in a private collection its up to the collector how he treats his precious artefacts.
But it does make me wince!
My parents once met Marilyn Monroe, when she was briefly married to Joe DiMaggio. My mother was always amused when Marilyn was described as "plus size". She did indeed, Mom said, have a very large test but seemed tiny to her (and Mom was a size 6).

I was expecting a lot of grief from people telling me what a spoil sport I was, so thanks to Arabella for backing me up! I'm only thinking of the future survival of iconic garments that not only we would love to see and enjoy, but perhaps our children and grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteIt was gratifying to learn that Marilyn was not simply a 'plus size' figure (as if!), but had an extraordinary and unusual figure, as many women who slip through the gaps of 'standard sizes' frequently do.
Her figure was a evidently a big factor in her initial breakthrough, but was merely an additional attraction when considering her beauty, charisma, star quality and acting talent (Bus Stop is a favourite of mine).
The standard measure for a 'beautiful figure' used to be at least 10 inches difference from bust to waist, and waist to hips, and she certainly exceeded that. Very few women these days come anywhere close (me included).
Well I certainly did, when I was very young. My measurements weren't much different from hers, but looking at pics of her and me at 18 or so, she seemed much more delicate.I had the tiny waist, but looked much more lusty peasant girl.
ReplyDeleteAlas, the plot has thickened with age, and it is hard not to look dumpy when one is short and busty - unforgiving if one puts on any weight. Though I guess there are worse things than looking like the Queen...
And I also agree with Trevira, as would anyone who has had anything to do with historical conservation.
I see young women today still trying for this 'nightstand with the top drawer pulled out' shape, with breast implants that make the bust large for the ribcage and hips. It's still telegraphs desirability (and fertility.)

ReplyDeleteThe weird thing now is big boobs with just a boyish straight shape below. Some of us have this for about 6 months at the age of 12, but it is one of those bizarre things that happen at puberty.

ReplyDeleteMarilyn didn't have a big bust! Just take a look at topless photos of her taken by Bert Stern just before her death in June, 1962. She's fairly average - even a bit on the small side. I assume that when wearing more upholstered clothes she had added a fair amount of padding. It appears to me that she didn't have an unusual figure at all - which I guess is good news for women.

ReplyDeleteYep - and from a 'price per wearing' standpoint, that makes them actually incredibly expensive. Better to buy something much better (though with a larger up front cost) that you know you need, will wear once a week, and that you know will last at least a year. That's at least 52 wearings divided into the cost. Buying junk that you wear once or twice and have to get rid of because they don't fit well, you actually don't want or that fall apart in the wash, is not economizing. It's actually just wasteful.
