A graceful tie, looks wonderful over a sweater. Problem is when you put a jacket over this tie, it mashes up. An aviator tie (AKA hacking knot) lives more easily under a coat.
I'm into neck pieces this winter - much less fabric and very warm. I have collected them over the years and sometimes cut them off the necks of sweaters.
Scarves are utterly necessary to achieve cycling chic. As in the Parisienne in these Sartorialist pics: http://tinyurl.com/5cw3ym I'm certain that the Milanese gentleman wears a fine woollen scarf when there is a chill in the air.
Odd, I don't have a long neck, and I love scarves. It is a matter of how you wind them - note the twist in the example shown.
