'Whatever comes,' she said, 'cannot alter one thing. If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.' Frances Hodgson Burnett.
(Had you heard of the anti-landmines campaign before Diana got involved? I hadn't)
Was she not one of the first to use her celebrity to bring attention to an international horror like that, if not the first? Whatever else one feels about her as a person, what happened to her, how she handled all of it, etc. etc., we can always hold this one thing up -- that she did good in the world and attracted other people like her (who ordinarily would have no reason to look at horrible things or get involved)to throw the weight of their influence in that direction. To that extent, perhaps we can say that Diana is the mother to people like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bob Geldorf and Bono.
