Who was the most important designer of the twentieth century? Coco Chanel, who invented modern dress and who liberated women for modern times? Or Christian Dior whose New Look created some of the most beautiful clothes ever made?

I'm surprised to see Chanel getting so many votes. While I can respect the effect her polished minimalism has had on the fashion community, I truly think the New Look resonates much more in society today. The Coco Chanel "look" is a classic, but one that not many try (or succeed in) emulating in everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of Chanel, but I have to give credit where it's due, and today I think it goes to Christian Dior.
I agree with Laundry, especially considering that the New Look emphasizes a silhouette that is almost universally flattering.
ReplyDeleteCoco subtracted fabric from her dresses, and changed the silhouette of femininity.

Draw.
Dior, absolutely. He wanted to create beauty, and was inspired by happy memories of his mother.
ReplyDeleteChanel flattened out the curves that are natural to women (thus subtracting femininity as well as fabric), and refused to pay her mannequins a decent wage, telling them to take lovers to make up the difference.
She was also a total Nazi sympathizer, which angers and nauseates me (she was living with a Nazi officer during the war, and offered to help the Germans with the negotiations with England when the war was nearing its end). Dior's sister, on the other hand, was in the Resistance, and wound up in the camps until Liberation.
Aesthetically, I also look fabulous in the New Look silhoutte, and like a lumpy rolled-up carpet in the classic Chanel silhoutte.
Dior, Dior, Dior!!
If you ask me I would definitely go for Chanel. as they have some class compared to others
ReplyDeleteDior added fabric to his dresses, and changed the silhouette of femininity.....which looks fabulous...:)
ReplyDeleteI praise your works, I praise your thinking, I praise your spirit. Great job done.
